“Surgically” sized garbage collectors – 2

The extremely organised and scientifically sized garbage collectors on the streets or at the bus stops have the main aim to prevent anyone from disposing big bags in these bins.
Good! Perfect! Smart!
But the practical life was not considered at all in these calculations!
For example, after the Saturdays’ nightlife and leisure, on a sleepy Sunday morning, I found the garbage collector at the bus stop under my house in this condition (see photos).
Pizza, plastic bottles, cans: what else? It would be nice if they could fit INTO the garbage bin, not just lying ON it…
These garbage objects probably look exactly the same as their last “owners” after a long night: snoring, burping and with a terrible headache!

“Surgically” sized garbage collectors

In Switzerland it’s quite complicate to eliminate your garbage, or, better to say, this operation is… extremely organised.
Every black bag with house garbage needs a special sticker to be collected and disposed, which is actually representing the tax on the garbage.
Therefore any “illegal” garbage disposal is fought by any means!

For this reason, any dust collector you find on the street makes your life hard, in case you think to “abandon” your domestic rubbish there.
The garbage container on the picture, which I noticed at my usual bus stop, is precisely (surgically, I would say!) sized to avoid any violation…

The hole through which the rubbish should be collected is so small, that you would need to be an ant to be able to eliminate your waste in a comfortable way!

The mystery of the forbidden glasses

2016-10-29-15-53-32
As you should know by now, timetables, times and schedules are some of the most beloved items in the Confederation!
But the nice times you see in this photo do not indicate the movies at the cinemas, the shows at the theatre or the shop opening hours in the city.
They simply show when you are NOT (I repeat: NOT!) allowed to through glasses in the common collection point!
Mondays to Fridays: 12:00-13:00 and after 20:00;
Saturdays: 12:00-13:00 and after 18:00;
Sundays and public holidays: all day.

Bloody hell: shall I even plan when to through away and recycle my bottles?
And the nicest thing is: why?
Maybe during the prohibited times I might be too noisy with my sounding, clattering, clinging, rebounding, orchestrating, thunderstorming pieces of glass?
Maybe…
But of course the glass collection points in the Confederation are usually located either in quite isolated areas or where other noises (e.g. cars on the road) would for sure cover the music of glasses falling into a hole!
Therefore this is really another Confederate enigma.
We should have a crystal ball to solve it, but we must pay attention to the allowed times for its use!

Paper recycling: the smart way

brings
As promised, I will talk a little more about paper recycling. There is a very simple recipe to avoid becoming exhausted the day before the paper collection.
The most of you probably already know. It’s as easy as Aspirine is good to heal a cold.

1. Go to your storage place, where all possible pieces of paper and cardboard are parked.
2. Pick up everything and throw it all in the trunk of your car.
3. Take a deep breath: tons of used paper are going to be finally apart from you!
4. Drive, and here it’s the top ingredient, to one of the collection points you can find under this link: www.brings.ch

In this collection point you will find multiple possibilities to get rid of all your paper! Without any need for binding your used paper with any sort of string. And without paying anything. Just weight the paper, and throw it into giant containers.

Of course some precision is still required: paper goes into the right container, cardboard goes into the left container. As the duly guardian will tell you. Just last detail: you need to become proud member of “brings!”, paying a small yearly fee and getting a card, to be shown every time you throw, sorry, you recycle something.

Did you realise? The name of these collection points, these oases in the Swiss garbage desert, is really containing the exclamation mark! Not just “brings”, but even “brings!” As if to say: Ah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! finally a place where I can get rid of my paper without getting damned in packing it before!

Maybe we will see another time, my dear foreign reader: “brings!” gives basically the possibility to recycle everything, sometimes for free, sometimes paying a fee, depending on the materials.

If you already knew “brings!”, you will probably agree with me, if not, do not worry, they won’t increase the prices of the yearly card due to my advertisement. Unfortunately they do not know my blog. Actually if you bring something to “brings!”, eventually inform them of this post. Normally the guardians there are quite friendly and talkative…

Paper recycling

Recycling of paper and cardboard is one of the best operations which can provide a good description of the Swiss vision, culture and methodology. Being mainly a physical activity (we will see…), paper recycling is like a national sport in Switzerland.

Used paper and cardboard are regularly collected every couple of months outside of every house, according to a detailed plan distributed at the beginning of every year to all the residents (normally also available in all the parish halls – Gemeindehäuser). Normally on Saturdays troops of young dudes, schoolboys, patrol all the possible streets, roads, alleys on small trucks to pick-up all the paper and cardboard to be recycled.

It is like a party, like a nice Saturday’s recreational activity for young guys. In a lot of locations, the joyful event  is advertised days in advance with a big board on the main street announcing the upcoming “Papiersammlung”!

Quite easy – you would think. “Quite”: yes. Or, better, “quiet”: yes. But “easy”: not really! Especially for the people who have to dismantle their paper and cardboard, religiously stacked for weeks in garages, cellars or some dedicated rooms, waiting for the ultimate collection.

Surprisingly not easy then! The paper shall be parked outside of every building in a precise way, as specified in the mentioned yearly recycling plan. Whatever is paper or cardboard shall be folded and packed with a string (used as a nice ribbon) like a typical “gift” package and deposited on the street. These paper-packages shall not be too heavy, to help the collection work of very young boys (again as recommended by the written procedure). The small boys cannot lift heavy packages, of course!

If I really wanted to be the perfect citizen and throw all the paper/cardboard stuff in the prescribed way, I would really have serious issues with things you would never imagine could create problems, especially problems to be thrown away! Have you ever tried to fold with a string various toilet or kitchen paper rolls, small advertisement cards – you wish you have never received – of all possible sizes and shapes, folded instructions impossible to open and made straight and flat?? All these terrible used “objects” always find a way to sneak out of your precious “piled paper gift”. And the more they find a way out, the more your nerves could become suitable strings to close your packages.

But, wait a minute! Paper into paper? This is the solution, yes! Just putting the raw paper inside a paper bag and that’s it? Nooo! Impossible, forbidden! Why? Absolutely no clue.

Too many times I was waiting for the “Papiersammlung” day as the hell coming onto Earth. Acrobatic actions to fit all the used paper and cardboard and keep them with a string, generally the night before the “Paper”-day (You cannot keep in mind all the collection dates, and you do not want the “poster” of the recycling plan on your wall as if it were a naif masterpiece)!

But one day I found the solution to avoid the dramatic operation of paper recycling…I will tell you soon about that.
